Perfect Week

Mustangs escape Nipawin with 2-1 shootout victory

Feb 9, 2025 | 4:45 PM

The Melfort Mustangs capped off a perfect week, Saturday night in Nipawin.

Melfort outlasted the Hawks, earning a 2-1 victory in a shootout.

“First period was great, we were hard, and we were doing everything right, exactly how we told them to do. In the second period, we got away from that, same with the third period. Four games in five nights, that’s a tough week for them, so it was good to see them gut it out in the end,” said assistant coach Tye Scherger.

“Good job by Madden Mulawka, he stood on his head. Special teams, we lost it tonight, in a rink like this, 0-for-4 on the power play isn’t good, you just have to simplify and shoot the puck. Our kill was two for three, that’s not great either, but it’s alright, we’ll reset here, and they’re gonna have a good break the rest of the weekend, and then we get back to it on Monday in preparation for Thursday.”

Mulawka made 19 saves between regulation and overtime, before stopping an additional three in the shootout, going perfect in the skills competition.

The Mustangs outshot the Hawks 30-20 overall, with Logan Belton scoring his 23rd of the season in the first before Reilley Kotai added the shootout winner.

All in all, it was just enough for the Stangs to get their revenge, having lost their previous trip to the Cage.

“Obviously, it’s always tough playing here, and it’s always a rivalry against them, so it’s always nice to beat them,” Scherger added.

With the perfect 4 and 0 week (victories over Weyburn, Yorkton, and Nipawin twice), the Blue and Green have now garnered themselves a six-point lead atop the SJHL standings, with two games in hand on second-place Flin Flon.

Next up will be the Red Wings visiting town on Thursday for the fourth and final meeting of the year.
