Melfort Judo Club hosts provincial judo tournament

The Melfort Judo Club hosted 67 athletes from around the province at a provincial judo tournament over the weekend.

The tournament was the first competition of this caliber to be held in Melfort for almost two decades.

Provincial coach Josh Hagen also came to Melfort and Unit Comprehensive Collegiate (MUCC) phys-ed classes for demonstrations.

RESULTS:

In the U10M Ne Waza, Clark Possberg of the Melfort Judo Club (MJC) took gold, as did Cade Phillips, Eli Wood, and Ethan Nagel of the MJC.

MJC’s Isla Possberg won bronze in the U12F Ne Waza.

In the U12M Ne Waza, Ryker Quibell of the MJC took the gold, while silver when to Marley Kamaga Armstrong of the MJC.

Bronze in the U12M Ne Waza went to MJC’s George Trawin.

In the U12 Ne Waza, silver went to Christopher Connolly and bronze to Wyatt Phillips of MJC.

Melfort Judo Club’s Chris Connolly took bronze in Ne Waza Exhibition.

The Battleford Judo Club’s Silvan Raess took gold in U14 Ne Waza.

MJC’s Omar Alidrissi won silver in the U14M Ne Waza.

U16M Ne Waza bronze went to MJC’s Brody Hiebert.

In Tachi Waza, Clark Possberg once again won golf in the U10M category, with Cade Phillips and Ethan Nagel winning bronze.

Isla Possberg won bronze in U12F, and in U12M, Jonah Wood, Ryker Quibell, and Marley Kamanga Armstrong of MJC took gold, silver, and bronze respectively.

Christopher Connolly and Wyatt Philips won gold and silver in U12M.

In U14M –42, gold went to Silvan Raess of the Battleford Judo Club. He also took silver in the U16M –46 category.

Omar Alidrissi took silver in the U14 M –55 competition.

Brody Hiebert won silver in the U16M +73 category.

Wyatt Hiebert of MJC won silver in the U18/Senior M –81 category, and gold in the –81 Senior M Ne Waza category.

In U18/Senior M +90, Riley Phillips of MJC took gold, while in the Senior M Ne Waza Advanced +100 category, Phillips won silver.

The next Saskatchewan event will be the Kata clinic in Moose Jaw Feb. 15, while the provincial judo team will next see competition in Vancouver at the Pacific International Tournament from Feb. 28 to March 2.
