A Melfort woman is one step closer to reaching her goal of running in all seven major marathons around the globe.

Robyn Luthi has been accepted into the high performance sub-elite program for the 2025 TCS Sydney Marathon, being held in Australia Aug. 31.

Luthi told northeastNOW she had to apply based on her time and they only take a certain number of people, with preference given to runners from Australia and New Zealand.

She said they just added Sydney as the seventh major marathon last fall, joining Berlin, Boston, Chicago, London, New York, and Tokyo. Luthi has run all six of the other majors.

“I felt that if there was one more [major marathon] added, I needed to complete it, just because I’m competitive and love the challenge,” Luthi explained. “It’ll be exciting to be one of the first Canadians to have a seventh star from the world’s Abbott Marathon series.”

Luthi had been planning to run the World’s Age Group Championship in New York and have another run in the Chicago Marathon to see if she could beat her best-ever time. However, she will no longer run in those events now that she has been accepted in the Sydney Marathon.

“Just because of the closeness of the races I can’t physically perform to my best at all three in the fall,” she explained.

Last year Luthi ran in the Tokyo and New York marathons and also did two half-marathons. In 2025 she will focus on the Sydney race and one half-marathon. Aside from completing the seven majors, Luthi also looks forward to visiting Australia for the first time.

“It wasn’t even on my radar of places to go,” Luthi admitted, but said once she’s in a new race location she loves it.

“It’s such a great experience and a way to see the world. I’m excited to see what Sydney and Australia have to offer.”
