Mustangs penalty kill fuels third period comeback

Feb 14, 2025 | 7:31 AM

The Melfort Mustangs had to come back multiple times on Thursday night when they played the Weyburn Red Wings for the final time this season.

After surrendering the first goal, Melfort scored two straight to take a 2-1 lead, before Weyburn added a pair of their own to make it 3-2 after 40 minutes.

The Mustangs then tallied the final two goals of the game in the third period, hanging on for the 4-3 win.

The Stangs are now 20 and 1 at the Palace this season, extending their home win streak to 18 games.

“I’d say it’s our fans coming out every single night that allows us to play so well at home. I don’t think there’s been a game where we haven’t had a good amount of fans, and they cheer loud for us, so they’re our biggest supporters,” explained Mustangs’ forward Danton Cox.

Melfort won three out of four matchups against Weyburn this season which is particularly good considering it comes against a team that is currently top-three in the standings.

“It’s good to play high-calibre teams throughout the year, it gets us into playoff shape, so we just want to keep on rolling,” Cox added.

Now winners of five straight, the Blue and Green used an excellent penalty kill on this particular night to get the job done, going five for five on the kill with a shorthanded goal.

That shorty actually turned out to be the game-winner, as Cox buried the second chance rebound off a Tristin Ziola Rush.

“Our penalty kill has been good all year, we kind of harp on working hard, and (Tye) Scherger does a great job of systematically telling us what to do. We really work hard and I usually go out with Ziola on the penalty kill, and he did a really good job of getting through. He ended up going down to the net and then I just got a rebound goal,” said Cox.

The Stangs will next play Saturday, in La Ronge when they take on the Ice Wolves.
