Snow clearing efforts continue in Melfort as warmer weather arrives

The City of Melfort’s snow-clearing crew has been busy trying to clear snow after it finally warmed up outside.

City Manager Adam Homes said crews are working to clear snow to ensure drainage systems remain functional.

“Alongside their snow removal efforts, they are thawing catch basins, combating the icy grip that could lead to further complications,” Homes explained.

He said it becomes crucial to ensure drainage systems for the snow melt to operate as designed. Residents are being asked to avoid shoveling snow onto streets or sidewalks because it can obstruct drainage. Homes said residents can help ensure drainage runs smoothly.

“Whenever it is safe and possible, we encourage you to help clear snow, ice, and debris from catch basins in your area,” said Homes.

The warmer weather has helped melt the snow, making it easier to clear for city crews. However, Homes said the warmer weather can also lead to refreezing, creating icy conditions that complicate removal efforts. Despite the challenges the freeze/thaw cycle presents, Homes said that crews are prepared to navigate those challenges.

Homeowners can take action to help prevent flooding or seepage in their homes as the snow begins to melt.

“To ensure proper drainage and protect your home, it’s important to clear snow away from the foundations and to make sure that downspouts direct water away from the house,” said Homes. “Most lots typically drain along the outer edges, to be sure to remove snow from these areas as well.”

Homes said maintaining eavestroughs and downspouts can help prevent blockages and help water flow properly.
