Hawks down Millionaires to snap Melville’s 11-game winning streak

The Hawks are enjoying playing the role of spoilers this time upsetting Melville and snapping the Millionaires’ 11-game winning streak with a 4-3 victory Tuesday.

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) club isn’t going to the playoffs but are playing inspired hockey winning their seventh game in their last 10, while avoiding a season sweep by Melville.

Jack Schierau led the way offensively for Nipawin scoring two goals including the game winner and added an assist. The 18-year-old Port Moody, B.C. product said the team is playing great right now.

“We’re rolling, just sticking with what works every night,” he said after the game. “We got away from that a couple games ago against La Ronge and it’s just been our focus to get back to what works. Just keep it rolling and not overthink it.”

Eric Hoiness, the reigning Saskatchewan Player of the Month for February in the SJHL scored his 13th goal shortly after Schierau gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead in the second on a powerplay.

Melville cut the lead to 2-1 with a late goal in the second during a Millionaires’ man advantage, with Melville gaining momentum going to the final frame, Schierau got the puck to the net on an offensive zone faceoff and Jack Janzen shovelled in his fifth of the year from his stomach to restore the Hawks two goal cushion.

Melville scored to cu the lead to 3-2, but moments later Schierau rifled his fourth goal of the year past Nick Genette ensuring the win. Schierau said the club has dealt with adversity all season long.

“We’ve dealt with being behind, or getting scored on multiple times this year so just being able to stick together when we need it most. Especially in a tight game on the road we know it will be the simple things,” he said.

Schierau, 18, was acquired from the Calgary Canucks of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) in December. The rookie forward has four goals and three assists for the Hawks in 24 games. He said it took some time to get accustomed to junior ‘A’ but he’s happy to contribute to wins.

“It feels good,” he said. “I think I have adjusted to the speed of junior but also the expectations of the coaches and those around me. It feels nice to get that but the biggest thing is we came home with two points tonight.”

The Hawks will play their final road game of the year on Friday in Melfort against the reigning champions and top ranked club again this season. Schierau said the team will enjoy one more road game with this roster.

“We’re going to soak that up no matter how the game goes but it always helps when you pick up a couple points on the road then happy bus,” he concluded.

Faceoff is 7:30 p.m. at the Northern Lights Palace.
