Mustangs begin title defence Friday as playoff journey starts against Klippers

Mar 21, 2025 | 2:40 PM

Game 1, Round 1 of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) playoffs begin tonight, as the number-one seed Melfort Mustangs host the eighth-place Kindersley Klippers.

Friday’s game starts a playoff defence for the Mustangs, as they’ll take it one game at a time in hopes of recapturing the Canterra Seeds Cup.

“This was one of the main reasons I wanted to get traded here, just knowing the winning culture of this team and the success that they had last year. I want to do it again with this group of boys and hopefully bring back a national championship this time around,” said defenceman of the year and Melfort assistant captain Nic Andrusiak.

“I’m super excited to get this run going and so are the boys. We’re just ready to run with it and see how much damage we can do.”

Melfort is the heavy favourite entering this series as they went 4-0 over Kindersley this year and were better than the Klippers in all the major statistical categories.

Just because the series may seem tilted, however, Andrusiak explained that his team can’t look at it that way and must play their best.

“We just gotta stick to our game and we can’t play down to them. We went over a lot of video this week and we know what we have to do to be successful. We want to go out there and prove why we’re number one,” he added.

“Starting off on the right foot tonight is going to be huge, so we just have to focus on that first shift, first period, first game, and then go from there. Just play our game, get a couple of hits in and just roll on.”

Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m. from the Northern Lights Palace in Melfort, with the RR & 3As Cafe pregame show beginning at 7:10 p.m.
