One Win From Round 2

Mustangs hang on, take 3-0 series lead

The Melfort Mustangs won by the skin of their teeth Tuesday night in Game 3 against the Kindersley Klippers.

Melfort held off a late rally by the Klippers, holding on for a 4-3 victory.

“In the first period we didn’t stick to the way we play, in the D zone we were losing guys and not winning the hard area battles. We went into the intermission and had a bit of a reset, then the second and third periods were good, so that was good to see,” said assistant coach Tye Scherger.

“We stayed composed on the bench when they got it within one late. You look in the regular season, we had a lot of one-goal games, and Coombs was battling back there, and he was lights out, so we were still more than confident. Obviously it’s good to see the boys get it done and battle through it, especially when it comes to crunch time, so that’s good to see, especially in playoffs.”

The Mustangs are now one win away from Round 2 as they lead this first-round series 3-0.

Wednesday’s contest won’t be any easier, though, as Kindersley will be playing for their season.

“Emotions were high and the game got chippy, including a couple of fights, but that’s playoff hockey. You gotta love it and if that doesn’t get you up, I don’t know what will. It was awesome, and I’m excited for tomorrow, hopefully, it’s a good one,” Scherger added.

“We have to have a better first period in Game 4 and it all starts in the D zone. We have to have better commitment and a full 60-minute game. Let’s get on the forecheck, play the way we play, and we’ll be just fine.”
