Alberta’s agriculture minister in Washington to discuss importance of free trade

Apr 7, 2025 | 2:15 PM

Minister of Agriculture RJ Sigurdson will represent Alberta in Washington, D.C. on Monday to engage in important discussions on how agriculture is beneficial on both sides of the North American border.

“I want every ag producer and processor in our province to know that we have your back and will continue to advocate for your needs during these difficult times,” Sigurdson said in a statement Sunday.

Alberta’s government said the agri-food industry is shaped by exports, and the U.S. is by far Alberta’s – and Canada’s – most important trade partner.

The province said it is committed to protecting and growing the relationship between the two countries.

“Though the April 2 announcement from the Trump administration was a positive one for our province and country for the time being, some uncertainty remains and our relationship with the U.S. needs to be restrengthened,” said Sigurdson.

Alberta’s government said in 2024, the province exported $9.3 billion in ag products to the U.S., a 4.3 per cent increase from 2023.

The province said Sigurdson is committed to working with his national and international counterparts to advance shared interests and maximize efficiencies in the North American agri-food industry.

Provincial officials say these efficiencies can lead to mutually beneficial opportunities for producers, processors and consumers.

Sigurdson will travel with one staff member. Mission expenses will be posted on the travel and expense disclosure page.
