Humboldt Fire Department reminds residents on proper handling of discarded needles

The Humboldt Fire Department (HFD) has issued a reminder to residents on what to do if discarded needles are found.

The department said that if someone finds one and is uncomfortable disposing of the needle themselves, they can give them a call.

For safe pick-up and disposal, residents should wear garden, work or medical gloves, and use tweezers, pliers, or tongs to pick the needle up by the plunger end, not the sharp end. It’s also vital to keep the sharp away from your body, and not to cap the needle.

The needle can then be placed with the sharp end first into a hard container that a needle cannot poke through, like a laundry detergent or bleach bottle. Then, put the lid on that container, tape it, and keep it away from children until it can be disposed of safely. Afterward, wash hands thoroughly.

“Do not place needles in city garbage or recycling,” the department stressed.

The container can be placed in a needle drop box behind the Humboldt and District Health Complex or directly behind PARTNERS Family Services.

The department also said it’s important to educate children about what to do when they find needles.

“Ensure children understand they should never pick up needles,” the department said. “If they find a discarded needle, they should notify an adult immediately.”

In the unfortunate event of a needle stick injury, the HFD said it’s important to seek medical attention as soon as possible.

“Encourage bleeding immediately and place the wound under running tap water to flush it out,” said the department. “Do not suck on the wound even if water is not available.”

They encourage residents to note the characteristics of the needle, including its size and the depth of the injury. It’s also recommended to package the needle in a hard-surfaced, enclosed container that can be taken to the emergency department.
