One dead, two arrested in officer-involved shooting in Deschambault Lake

RCMP have released more information about the officer-involved shooting in Deschambault Lake yesterday.

Police said that at 8:41 a.m., two Deschambault Lake RCMP officers came across five people gathered in a wooded area near the community.

During the encounter, a confrontation sparked between the officers and one of the individuals, identified only as a man from Deschambault Lake. As things got more heated, the two officers shot the man and despite providing medical assistance, he died at the scene.

No explanation was given as to what led the officers to discharge their firearms at the man, however, a gun and several replica firearms were located and seized at the scene. Neither officer was physically injured.

As a result, four people were arrested at the scene and two were quickly released without charge.

The other two were 31-year-old Earl Ballantyne from Pelican Narrows and 20-year-old Sherri Custer from Deschambault Lake.

Ballantyne is charged with reckless discharge of a firearm and possession of a weapon. He was also arrested on an outstanding warrant in relation to a separate investigation. Meanwhile, Custer is charged with breach of an undertaking in relation to that same investigation.

Both are scheduled to appear in Prince Albert Provincial Court via video call on Monday, August 11.

The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) is investigating the circumstances of the officer-involved shooting. Saskatchewan RCMP’s Prince Albert, North Battleford and Saskatoon Provincial General Investigation Sections are investigating the initial call for service received by Deschambault Lake RCMP.

Police advised that the increased police presence will continue in Deschambault Lake, and that no additional information will be released due to the ongoing SIRT investigation.
