Mustangs in Weyburn for first time since last year’s Finals

For the first time in the 2025/26 campaign, the Melfort Mustangs have hit the road for a multi-game swing.

This means a hotel overnight stay for the club, as they head south for a date with the Weyburn Red Wings and Estevan Bruins.

“Overnighters are always good to bond with the team, get the boys in the hotel, have some fun, and hopefully come home with two wins,” said forward Nolan Patterson.

“Probably gonna be a hostile environment in Weyburn after playing them in the final last year, so it should be lots of fun. I’m very excited to play them again and get it going.”

Melfort will begin in Weyburn on Friday, before travelling to Estevan on Saturday.

The Mustangs have been superb on the defensive side of things, giving up just 12 goals through six games.

Their offence, however, has yet to hit its full stride, scoring just 16 times in that same span.

According to Patterson, the team knows that side will come a little more, as long as they stick to what they’ve been doing so far.

“Obviously, our game is big on defence, and you have to get the puck to go on offence, so defence is big,” he added.

“There hasn’t really been an extra focus on offence, our practices have just been about flow and getting the legs going again.”

Madden Mulawka is set to return to the Stangs’ lineup tonight, his first game since being knocked out of the Sept. 23 contest against the La Ronge Ice Wolves.

Exciting news for the Blue and Green to get their starting netminder back, with Kason Kobelka having held down the fort in excellent fashion these past couple of weeks.

“Kason’s been really good. MVP of the week last week, and it shows. He’s been awesome and the backbone of our team for the past couple of weeks,” Patterson concluded.
