Melfort Fire Department battles fires and frigid temperatures
A relatively slow start to 2026 for Melfort Fire and Rescue Services didn’t last long.
They attended several calls over the weekend. The first was just before 12:30 a.m. Friday on Burrows Avenue West. A furnace on fire was caught early and contained. Shortly after 5 p.m., they were called out to a false alarm, and later in the evening, battled a vehicle on fire on McLeod Avenue West.
On Saturday around 11:15 a.m., crews were called out for mutual aid in Star City to support them in battling two structure fires side by side. A trailer and house were fully engulfed in flames and members spent most of the afternoon trying to put out the flames in the frigid cold. They spent about four hours battling the blaze during a time when the wind chill values were near -40 C.
