Carrot River RCMP nab suspect in confinement, shooting incident in Shoal Lake

Carrot River RCMP arrested and charged 34-year-old Billy Whitecap following a shooting on the Shoal Lake Cree Nation several days ago.  

Officers were called to the community on March 10 shortly after 5 a.m. and found an injured man in a vehicle on Highway 55.  

EMS also responded and took the victim to hospital with serious injuries.  

Police learned that a fight between two men at a home in Shoal Lake resulted in a gun being fired, hitting one of the men involved.  

The victim left the home, and the suspect then prevented a woman who had been inside from leaving. She was not injured.

Later that day, officers found Whitecap and arrested him. They also found and seized a sawed-off firearm.  

Whitecap is charged with aggravated assault, forcible confinement and multiple gun-related charges.  

He made his first appearance in Nipawin Provincial Court yesterday.
