Humboldt RCMP warn residents of ‘grandparent scam’

RCMP in Humboldt are warning the public about an attempted fraud. 

It’s all linked to the infamous “grandparent scam.” 

Someone in Humboldt received a call March 6 from an unknown person impersonating their grandson saying that he was in jail and needed money for bail. 

“If you encounter this scam, we recommend contacting your family member they are impersonating directly or reach out to your local RCMP detachment and confirm the incident,” Humboldt RCMP said in a news release. 

Hundreds of thousands of dollars are lost each year across Canada to grandparent scams, and a recent presentation by Melfort RCMP Staff Sgt. Ryan Case outlined the scam as just one of many making the rounds over the years.
