About 80 needles in Melfort last spring

Discarded needles an issue after every snow melt

It’s a sad reality once the snow melts – the discovery of needles.

Melfort Fire Chief Leonard Whitney told northeastNOW that there will be sharps that reveal themselves as the snow fades away.

What should you do should you encounter a needle in Melfort?

“The best thing we recommend is to call City Hall,” Whitney said. “Give them the best description you can of where the needle is located and then we will head out and we will pick that up.”

Whitney said the easier the needle is for the fire department to find, the quicker they can get it off the street.

“If you can mark it without getting too close to it, then we would appreciate that.”

Discovering needles at this time of year is fairly common, according to Whitney.

“I think last year, once the snow had [gone], we rounded up probably close to 80 needles out of the community,” Whitney explained. “We always get an influx in the spring and then it usually slows down in the summer.”

Whitney said they just want people to be safe, and that’s why they recommend calling City Hall and letting the fire department deal with the discarded sharps.

“It’s not worth the risk if you don’t have the proper PPE to protect yourself from stuff like that,” said Whitney. “There’s no sense in taking the risk; it’s better just to give us a call and let us take care of it.”
