In need of repair

Melfort residents asked for input on water tower’s future

The City of Melfort wants to hear from residents about the future of the water tower.

A formal inspection of the iconic structure in 2023 indicated the roof and cladding is in need of repair with an estimated cost of around $400,000.

The City has launched an online survey to get feedback from Melfort citizens as the City assesses the future of the structure.

“Given the level of investment required for repairs or potential removal, it’s important that community priorities help inform the decision,” said Community Development Coordinator Kayla Prefontaine. “We’re looking to understand how residents value the water tower, whether preserving it is important to the community, or if there is support for removal and avoiding ongoing maintenance costs.”

Prefontaine said the feedback will help guide council in determining the preferred path forward.

As mentioned, the tower needs repairs, including work to the wood cladding and roof. Additional work would include a full repaint of the structure. Prefontaine said the upgrades are necessary to maintain the long-term integrity of the structure.

Residents who are unable to access the online survey are urged to contact City Hall, and staff can assist them in providing feedback on the water tower’s future.

“All feedback collected will be reviewed and summarized to help inform Council’s decision-making process,” Prefontaine said. “The results will provide valuable insight into community priorities regarding investment in the water tower.”

The survey will close May 6, and Prefontaine said a timeline for a final decision will be determined following a review of the survey’s results and future discussions.
