Fourth annual MMIWG walk held in Melfort

“This is something that goes back, it’s a very traditional way,” Arcand said.

A prayer, land acknowledgement, and a song by the Whitefish Junior Group followed, grounding the event in culture, respect and shared purpose.

The walk was held shortly after, with an RCMP escort to lead the way in what was a symbolic show of unity and support.

The walk is normally held near Red Dress Day, which is May 5. Red Dress Day is a national day of acknowledgement for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit individuals.

“Red dresses are hung on windows, trees, schools, and public spaces,” Arcand explained. “The empty dresses are a visual symbol representing Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirited people who are missing or have been taken too soon.”

During his speech, Arcand spoke about the importance of not only remembering those who are missing or have been lost, but also of healing and spreading awareness to ensure the messages continue to reach beyond the day itself.

“It’s amazing to see people coming out within our community,” Arcand said, adding that others have come from as far as five hours away to be part of the Missing & Murdered Indigenous Walk.

At the event, Arcand also highlighted Blue Jean Jacket Day, observed on June 6, which recognizes missing, murdered, and exploited men and boys.
