Hawks announce forward commit, continue hunt for assistant coach

May 11, 2026 | 4:44 PM

The Nipawin Hawks are making moves both on and off the ice ahead of the 2026/27 SJHL season.

The club recently secured a commitment from forward TJ Terpsma, while also beginning the search for a new assistant coach following the departure of Derek Hutton.

Terpsma, 17, joins the Hawks after developing through the Leduc Oil Kings program in Alberta. The Beaumont native spent one season each at the U15 and U17 AAA levels before skating the past two years with the club’s U18 AAA team.

The 2008-born forward enjoyed a breakout season in 2024/25, recording 43 points — including 12 goals and 31 assists — in 38 games. He also earned a pair of call-ups with the AJHL’s Fort McMurray Oil Barons.

In 2025/26, injuries limited Terpsma to 17 games, where he collected 12 points.

Meanwhile, the Hawks will also have a new look behind the bench next season.

Assistant coach Derek Hutton will not return to the organization after spending the past two seasons with the club.

The team has since posted the opening as it looks for a “driven, detail-oriented” assistant coach for the upcoming season.

The position is full-time and seasonal. Applications can be submitted to head coach Tad Kozun at nipawinhawks@sasktel.net.
