NEOSS Walk a Mile in Her Shoes in Nipawin June 5

May 22, 2026 | 5:00 PM

Men will be kicking up their heels in Nipawin in a couple of weeks.

North East Outreach and Support Services (NEOSS) is hosting Walk a Mile in Her Shoes June 5 in Nipawin.

NEOSS Executive Director Joan Bear told northeastNOW that they are hoping for at least 60 registrations for the walk. Men (and others) are meant to walk in red high heels as a show of support for those who have experienced gender-based violence.

“This event is a key public relations event in Nipawin to raise awareness of domestic violence/gender-based violence as the issue is very real in the region,” Bear said.

Saskatchewan continues to have one of the highest rates of gender-based violence in the country, and that’s especially true for rural areas of the province.

“This is an opportunity for men to demonstrate their support of efforts to combat violence against women through a public demonstration of walking a mile in high heeled shoes to identify with the struggles abused women go through and that they will publicly champion efforts to stop the violence and lend support to agencies like NEOSS to provide services to end gender-based violence,” said Bear.

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes will begin with registration and donation drop-offs at 11:30 at Nipawin Town Square. Men will also get fitted for their shoes for the walk during that time. Elder George Cook will begin the event with an opening prayer before the walk starts at noon. Lake Country Co-op will host a barbecue afterward at the town square, and there will also be a bake sale, guest speakers, and a live band.

“We have teams and individuals already registering to raise money and awareness for the event,” Bear said.

Donations are used for operational supports for the emergency women’s safe shelter in Melfort, and Bear said funds are used “to replenish sexual assault dignity kits at the local hospital for women to have clean clothes and toiletries to freshen up after being treated for sexual assault at the hospital.”

Bear said local businesses and groups can register for the event as a team or individually and raise pledges for financial donations. They can also send their corporate mascots to the event or become a corporate sponsor for the event. Bear said they could even just come out to have a burger and show their support by being present at the festivities.

Walkers can register ahead of time for $25 and raise pledges. They can also join the walk the day of the event.

Bear said the Town of Nipawin and Saskatchewan Health Authority are also supporting the event by offering refreshments and shoe taping.
