Councillor makes statement

Allegations surface regarding Humboldt City Manager Joe Day

A social media post by a Humboldt councillor alleging concerning conduct by the city’s chief administrative officer is drawing attention locally and prompting a council review.

Sarah McInnis said she no longer supports the direction of City Manager Joe Day, citing what she described as multiple incidents during her time on council, including one Tuesday involving her daughter’s school.

“I cannot continue to support the direction the city manager is taking our council,” McInnis said in a statement posted online. “There have been several incidents during my time as councillor that I have raised concern over, but an incident today [Tuesday] is my final straw.”

McInnis said the incident she is referring to is not a complete picture of her concerns, adding she has raised issues previously.

“When I ran for councillor I ran as a mom of small kids with dreams for their future of a community where they can thrive,” McInnis said. “Standing up for my family, and for the people of Humboldt who elected me to serve in their best interest will always be my North Star.”

McInnis said the alleged incident involving City Manager Joe Day occurred Tuesday near St. Dominic’s School.

She said witnesses reported Day was upset that he had to wait while a school bus with Pre-K students was unloading with its red lights flashing. McInnis said witnesses reported he exited his vehicle, left it in the roadway, and yelled at a teacher assisting children off the bus.

Those claims have not been independently verified.

McInnis said she brought her concerns to council before posting publicly and provided written statements from witnesses to council. She said there are other issues she has raised previously but could not disclose them due to confidentiality.

“I wasn’t just this one incident that pushed me to make a public statement on the city manager and my withdrawal of support,” McInnis said. “It’s been building.”

The City of Humboldt said in an emailed statement that mayor and council are aware of the allegations made publicly regarding the incident near St. Dominic’s School on Tuesday.

City of Humboldt said council intends to review the matter at a special meeting to ensure a fair and impartial assessment of the allegations. It said no further public comment would be made until that process is complete.

Day has served as City Manager in Humboldt since 2017 and had previously announced that he was retiring in August
