As part of the process, each organization vying for the donation makes a presentation to the 100 Women outlining what they do, and how the money would be used. Whitney said they will be using the money for wildland boots for members of the department.

The purchase is especially important due to the increasing instances of being deployed to fight wildfires across the province. Crews from Melfort and several other local communities helped battle the fire that threatened La Ronge and other wildfires across northern Saskatchewan. 

“We don’t actually have specific wildland boots, which would definitely help our members’ comfort level if we do get out [to fight] wildfires again,” Whitney said.

The $10,000 will cover approximately 80 per cent of the cost of the purchase for the new boots, according to Whitney.

The boots will come in handy should wildfires continue to persist in Saskatchewan throughout the coming years. Whitney said there hasn’t been much time over the past few years for things to green up after the snow melt, as it seems to go straight from winter into summer-like conditions: hot, dry, and windy. 

The City of Melfort and the community have been extremely generous toward the fire department, according to Whitney. The Melfort Fire Department’s annual Wing Ding fundraiser has always been well supported, and Whitney said that has helped them purchase needed equipment over the years. The Ripley Rumble PBR event last year also raised money for the fire department.  

Whitney said the 100 Women Who Care presentation was a great opportunity for them to get an audience with influential women in the community, and it was nice to see that they agreed about the need for new wildland boots. 

“I appreciate the 100 Women Who Care organization and I think that they’re doing a tremendous job,” Whitney said. “I think we’re fortunate to have that organization in our community.” 

The Melfort Daycare Co-operative and Melfort Amateur Dramatics also made presentations at the meeting.
