RCMP are searching for a 26-year-old man after a shooting early Saturday on Yellow Quill First Nation in eastern Saskatchewan.

Rose Valley RCMP said officers were called to the community at about 4:35 a.m. after receiving a report of a shooting. A man was found injured outside a residence and taken to hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Investigators also found a vehicle at the scene that had been damaged by fire. Police said the suspect fled before officers arrived, and called for help with the search from Yorkton RCMP Police Dog Services but did not locate him.

RCMP have identified the suspect as Kain Cheechan of Yellow Quill First Nation and said a warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Police said Cheechan is charged with discharging a firearm with intent, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, unauthorized possession of a firearm, arson causing damage to a motor vehicle and two counts of possession contrary to an order.

He is described as five-foot-seven and 176 pounds, with brown eyes and black hair.

Mounties warned the public not to approach Cheechan if he is seen and asked anyone with information about his whereabouts to contact Rose Valley RCMP or Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS(8477).
