Hawks host annual general meeting to cap 2025 season

The Nipawin Hawks held their annual general meeting (AGM) with a small crowd of attendees Tuesday at the Centennial Arena.

Mike Peifer remained on as president of the organization after taking over partway last season. After the meeting, he stressed the importance of rehiring Tad Kozun as head coach and general manager.

“Yes, it was, it was very hard and grueling contract discussions, but we got it done,” he said.

Finances are always an important topic for any non-profit organizations. The Hawks currently sit with over $250,000 in fund balances, down roughly $40,000 from 2024. Peifer said budgeting a million dollars for a community of 4,000 people is not an easy task.

“It’s always tight, the dollar doesn’t go as far as it used,” he said.

For example, bus fees for travel increased by eight percent. Despite a drop in funds from 2024 to 2025, Peifer insured the team is on solid financial terms.

“No, there is no financial crisis right now,” Peifer confirmed.

Fundraising had a large part of the positive news financially with money going up to over $450,000 in 2025 from just over $400,000 in 2024. The Hawks Farming Project, chaired by locals Terry Slusar and Dennis Botteril, is the Hawks key money maker netting over $80,000 in revenue, up from $28,000 in 2024.

Peifer said last season’s fundraisers all went well.

“It was a lot of man hours, but they were all very successful this year,” he said.

Overall fundraisers were up roughly $55,000.

The only somewhat negative news was lack of nominations for board members. The team will continue with nine as of now but can have as many as 12. Peifer said there was almost pleads for help at the meeting.

“With us being a non-profit, we need two or three,” he said. “With the extra board members there is more diversity and extra ideas out there that can benefit the whole club.”

Billet coordinator Tina Haluke gave a report at the AGM as well, where the longtime volunteer stressed a concern about the payment billets receive to house a player. The board agreed an increase is needed and it has been discussed.

One thing Peifer said they are not considering is pay to play.

“We don’t want that, there is a few teams in the league that do it already, we don’t want to be a leader with that, we want to be a follower. Hopefully we are at the very end, and I am talking 10 years from now,” Peifer concluded.

Kozun is currently seeking an assistant to coach to replace Derek Hutton. Longtime athletic therapist Emma Galloway will return, as will assistant general manager Dana Dirks.

Training camp opens on Sept. 3.
