Council endorses Rec-Create Humboldt report on new recreation and cultural facility

Humboldt’s city council has given the green light to the Rec-Create Humboldt Steering Committee’s final report.

With the endorsement, the City has also approved $250,000 to advance planning for the proposed recreation and cultural facility.

The report was presented at Humboldt’s most recent council meeting on June 22.

The recommendation from the report was that the community develop an integrated facility, featuring an indoor sports court, multi-use performing arts space, and a second ice surface.

The City said in a news release that the recommendation was based on extensive community engagement with user groups and local donations, with many saying that capacity limitations were preventing them from hosting events, growing programs, and expanding opportunities.

Administration has been directed by council to start the next phase of project development, which will include preliminary planning, design work, and funding strategies.

“Rec-Create Humboldt has provided Council with a thoughtful, community-driven roadmap for the future,” Mayor Rob Muench said. “This approach allows us to build on that momentum, position ourselves for future funding opportunities, and ensure we are planning for the needs of our community for decades to come.”

Council also thanked the Rec-Create Humboldt members for volunteering their time to do much of the legwork in preparation for the development of the recreation and cultural facility, including engaging stakeholders, assessing community needs, and developing recommendations.
