Storm damage claims top $100 million after Saskatchewan storms

While the forecast this week doesn’t call for much rain across most of Saskatchewan, the province is still dealing with the aftermath of major storms that moved through last weekend.

SGI is reporting more than 16,000 claims have been filed related to storm damage from this summer so far.

According to information provided to paNOW by SGI, the majority of claims came from storm in June that hit Regina, where more than 15,000 auto claims were reported for hail damage. SGI Canada also received about 900 property damage claims.

In total, the reported damage in Regina is estimated at more than $100 million.

The city also recorded 100 property damage claims related to flooding.

North Battleford was the next area with significant hail damage stemming from this past weekend, with more than 200 auto claims reported following Friday’s storm. The storm also brought a tornado and reports of golf-ball-sized hail near Aquadeo and Jackfish Lake.

Swift Current has also seen hail-related damage, with 40 auto claims reported to SGI and another 100 property damage claims through SGI Canada.

There were also 70 property damage claims related to flooding reported in Canora, a community north of Yorkton with a population of just over 2,000.

The figures provided by SGI do not represent all property insurance claims in the province, as other companies handle property insurance coverage. The total number of auto claims, more than 15,240, includes all claims reported to SGI.

Anyone who has auto damage from the weekend storm that has not yet been reported can contact SGI at 1-844-TLK-2SGI (1-844-855-2744) and select the Saskatchewan auto claims option to submit a claim by phone. Claims can also be submitted online through SGI or in person at an SGI claims centre.

paNOW also reached out to the Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation to ask about crop insurance claims following the storms.

SCIC provided the following statement:

“The Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation continues to process claims for crops damaged by recent storms. As it is still early in the growing season, crops may have the potential to recover from storm-related damage. Producers are encouraged to wait 7–10 days after experiencing damage to assess their crops before submitting a claim. Under the multi-peril Crop Insurance Program, producers have yield-loss coverage if established crops sustain damage from an insured peril, including hail, wind and excess moisture, that affects production. Spot-loss hail damage is not available. To review program requirements before making decisions with their crops, such as putting the crop to alternate use, producers can contact SCIC at 1-888-935-0000.”
