East Central Wolverines set for first national championship in program history

“We have a lot of girls who train in the winter as well in Saskatoon, but we’re lucky because we have lots of pitching. We have quite a few arms, and we have a few big bats, so lots of times our hitting can get us out of trouble because we can get lots of runs. We’re really good defensively, so when all three of those things are working, then we usually do pretty well.”

The program is based in Humboldt; however, it brings in girls from Muenster, Watrous, Wadena, and Wynyard as well.

“I always say to the girls that if you add up those five towns, our population is still only like 12,000 people, and we’re competing against the cities, so we’re doing pretty well. I tell the girls to be proud of that and their commitment. We practice in a school gym in the winter, and in the curling rink once the ice is out, whereas cities have indoor centers that are all turf, so it’s pretty amazing that we’ve been able to put it all together,” Dusikoski added.

“Our girls have a really good commitment level, because for a lot of them it’s a lot of driving, and our pitchers are throwing all year round to be ready.”

The National Championships will be held in Fredericton, New Brunswick, starting next week. Dusikoski explained that many families will be making the trip out east for a vacation while watching top-quality ball.

“It’s a trip that many of our girls and families have never made. We gave them the week off after provincials, but we’ve since been practicing and scheduling games against other national attendees to best prepare,” she concluded.

“I know we’re gonna see some real strong teams there from the provinces that have better weather than us, but I think that we’ll be competitive, and we should be able to come out with some wins there. It’s just going to be a great experience. There will be travel ball and national team exposure there, so it’s a great opportunity for our girls who take ball pretty seriously and be in that realm of the top players in Canada. We ultimately just want to have fun as a team, and just making it as far as we have already is pretty awesome in itself.”
