“I think our team is almost more like a family than just a team, so that definitely helps us be successful,” he said. “We actually still have a lot of family on the team anyway, and everyone enjoys it and just has fun as a pastime.”

That family connection runs deep for Haeusler. His 65-year-old stepdad, his brother and his two sons are all members of the team, along with several close friends.

Most of the players are from Humboldt, with others joining from Melfort and Saskatoon.

The Canadian Championships will be held in Kelowna, B.C., in early September. The tournament was also hosted in Kelowna last year, when the Juice Pigs battled through five straight games on championship Monday in extreme heat.

“We got to the finals, and we were all just finished,” Haeusler said. “We gave it all we got, and we ended up only losing nine-seven, so it was close. Honestly, just the fact that we made it through that day with those temperatures was awesome and impressive in itself.”

July has been a quieter month for the team as players take a break and return to their regular routines. The plan is to ramp things back up in August with a few games before heading to B.C. for what Haeusler calls their “competitive slo-pitch vacation.”

The club will have all of their games at the Canadian Championships livestreamed on their Facebook page.
