McConaghy said prior to Omnisport’s arrival, they had a lot of help from local contactors that helped shape the site. J & K Customs helped do a lot of the earthwork, while the team at Carf’s Construction set up all the forms and poured the cement. 

Not only will the rink be brand new, but it will also be decidedly larger than the previous structure. 

“The original size of the rink was 53 by 100 [feet], and the new rink is largely expended, so we’re now 70 by 170 [feet].” 

The larger sized rink required an actual ice re-surfacer, which was donated by the City of Melfort. Local contractors will put in the foundation for the building that will house the re-surfacer, and that building will be moved on-site. 

“Once the building is on-site, we’ll connect the building to the rink, and then once that’s in place, we can do all the final touches,” McConaghy explained. 

Much like every other build in the northeast this year, progress has been affected by the rain. McConaghy said they now must connect the utilities to the service building, like water, sewer, power, and energy.  

“When will [the project] be finished? I’m hoping probably sometime in September, but it’s dependent on the weather and dependent on contractors.” 

He said he’s very pleased with the way the community has come together to support the project, whether it’s through in-kind contributions or donations. McConaghy cited Wright’s Greenhouse and the Melfort RCMP Golf Tournament as unexpected but welcome contributors. 

Board advertisements are available for $2000 or an in-kind contribution of the same amount, and McConaghy said they are tax deductible.  

Previous major sponsors announced include Ripley Ford, Prairie North Co-op, and Thomas Motors. 

McConaghy thanked the community for their interest in the rink upgrade, and the Kinsmen and Kinettes that have been part of the project 

“The goal of the Kinsmen is serving the community’s greatest need, and I think that this project will do that. It really takes a community to build something like this, and we’re going to have a wonderful facility.”
