Another graduating member of the Melfort Mustangs will soon be competing at the USports level as a part of a Canada West organization.

Defenceman Cole Unger will begin his journey with the University of Manitoba Bisons this fall, as he continues his hockey career post SJHL.

“I’ve been working towards playing with a USports team for my whole three years in Melfort, so I’m just really happy to finally get a place to play, especially at U of M. Obviously balancing hockey and school again will be a bit challenging at first, but I know after a couple of months I’ll get the hang of it again, and it’ll just be simple from there on out,” Unger told northeastNOW.

“Going to the Bisons, having Zach Turner there was a big reason for my commitment. Just knowing him so well and having been his d-partner for a whole year in Melfort, I know he’ll show me the ropes around school and the program and stuff. The coach there as well seems like a great guy and is a real players’ coach, and the program as a whole just seems strong.”

The 21-year-old native of Medicine Hat, Alta., spent three full seasons with the Mustangs, winning two league titles and a pair of National Silver medals.

Over 165 games in a Blue and Green uniform, Unger registered a total of 58 points.

“I think my game has come a long way since joining the SJ, especially being on the Mustangs. (Trevor) Blevins is such a good coach, and just develops a player into an all-around game. He’s really taken my game to another level, and having all that ice time and practice with the boys was just really a big factor in my success and my journey to U Sports,” he added.

“Playing post-secondary hockey is something I’ve been looking forward to for a long time, and I know the dedication and routine it takes, so I’m just excited to get to work. It’s going to be a fun year, and I also really look forward to seeing so many former teammates on a handful of other U Sports teams. Whether or not I’m playing, it’ll be nice to see them again, and hopefully, I can lay a bit of a hit on them out there on the ice.”
