Melfort council to vote on policy restricting access to city-owned property

Melfort’s City Council will discuss a policy regarding people causing issues at City-owned facilities.

Monday night’s meeting will bring forward a draft policy that was prepared by administration for council to consider.

The policy would establish “a consistent process for restricting access to City-owned facilities and lands when an individual’s behaviour threatens the safety, security, or respectful use of City spaces.”

The policy proposal comes after concerns were raised at the previous council meeting about an incident involving vandalism and drugs at the Northern Lights Palace.

Council has also been asked to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Ministry of Environment that defines the roles and responsibilities of each party in their battle against Dutch Elm Disease.

The Ministry currently handles a “buffer zone” around Melfort, as they administer an annual Dutch Elm Disease survey and removal program.

Monday’s meeting will also see Council deciding whether to approve a review regarding angle parking on Assiniboia St., near Melfort and Unit Comprehensive Collegiate (MUCC). That review would involve assessing potential effects of angle parking as it comes to vehicles and pedestrians, and would include stakeholders including MUCC, the North East School Division, and others, then report back to council with findings.
