Regina brothers win Premier’s Walleye Cup for second year in a row

The 38th annual Saskatchewan Premier’s Walleye Cup is successfully in the books, as nearly 80 teams descended on Nipawin for the two-day fishing event this past weekend.

Once again, though, it was the pairing of the Stockdale brothers, Will and Winston, who came out on top, doing so for the second straight year.

“It’s definitely super special to fish with my brother. I fished with my dad before my brother, so when you’re fishing with family, you’re just super comfortable, and it’s super fun. It just makes everything easier, because you support each other, and we want to win as a team. Yeah, you still might want to catch the slightly bigger fish, but we ultimately just want to win, and we do whatever we can for each other to make that happen,” explained older brother Winston.

“I think this specific style of tournament really fits our style well. We’re also very drawn to the tournament because of the people. The organizers really care about the anglers, and they make the tournament really fun. The competition is also always great, and it’s super beautiful in Nipawin this time of year.”

The Stockdale brothers won the championship with a total weigh-in of 85.90 lbs, narrowly edging the second-place finishers who had 85.87 lbs.

“An absolutely crazy finish; we’re definitely very lucky to have been on the winning side. You’re going to be on either side of that throughout your life, and I already have before, and I’ve accepted that, and it will continue that way. Definitely just blessed to be on the good side of it this time around,” Winston added.

“We’re going to be ready for a hopeful three-peat next year. We’ll do our best, and either way we’ll have so much fun, so we just can’t wait to be back… Will and I are committed to fishing and would love to continue competing at a high level across Saskatchewan, Canada, and possibly even down in the States.”

This year’s Saskatchewan Premier’s Walleye Cup was also part of the Saskatchewan Walleye Trail (SWT) for the first time in its 38-year history.

The SWT is a competitive fishing circuit made up of multiple walleye tournaments held across Saskatchewan each season. Anglers compete for cash prizes at each event and accumulate points toward the SWT Pro Challenge championship.
