Melfort landfill decommissioning nearing completion
A long project for the City of Melfort is nearing the finish line.
The city’s landfill decommissioning is close to completion.
“The old landfill cell is in the final stages of decommissioning, with the contractor putting down the final layer of cover material over the exposed waste, in preparation for topsoil and seeding,” Director of Public Works Kalyna Cipywnyk told northeastNOW. “The project is scheduled to be fully complete by the end of August, weather dependent.”
Cipywnyk said decommissioning a landfill site isn’t as easy as covering the site and walking away, with several environmental regulations that must be met first. That includes a ‘cap’ over the landfill that must be engineered and constructed to minimize infiltration of surface water into the garbage underneath, and containing existing leachate, the liquid that forms when precipitation moves through waste in a landfill.
