Hawks seek first win of the season in La Ronge Wednesday

The Nipawin Hawks seek their first win of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season Wednesday in La Ronge.

The Hawks are 0-3 to start the year and will begin the week against the Ice Wolves on the road. Nipawin last played on Friday, Sept. 25, a 5-4 loss to the Warman Wolverines. The setback followed two losses on the road during the first weekend of the campaign. Head Coach Tad Kozun said his club just isn’t defending well enough to start the year.

“We just have to get back to playing the way we can,” Kozun said. “I don’t like the way we’ve defended. We have given up way too many grade ‘A’ opportunities so far. Looking back to last year we were hard to play against, and we created offence that way. We’re not hoping to win 8-7, we are fine winning 1-0, 2-1, that’s what our mindset must be.”

The Hawks will play three road games this week starting with Wednesday’s matchup with the Ice Wolves. On the weekend the club heads to Weyburn for games against the Red Wings and the Estevan Bruins. Kozun said the staff has learned lots about the team early this year with five road games in the first half dozen games this season.
