At KVC on Saturday

Culturama highlights Melfort’s growing diversity

Oct 1, 2026 | 3:03 PM

An annual event celebrating the various cultures making up the city of Melfort will be held this weekend.

Culturama 2026 is taking place at the Kerry VIckar Centre (KVC) Saturday, Oct. 3, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Melfort Museum curator Brenda Mellon said the entire KVC will be used, with the gymnasium full of cultural displays, entertainment in the CJVR Performing Arts Theatre, and demonstrations, hands-on workshops, and kids’ activities happening throughout the facility.

Food is also a huge hit at Culturama, with various meals available for purchase. Some of the cultural displays in the gym will also have food and drink samples.

Mellon said new this year is the “Common Thread” project, which features a dress made up of sections featuring a variety of backgrounds and cultures. That will be displayed in the lobby, and Mellon said they took the idea and expanded it to a community quilt project.

“We thought it would be a neat idea to have other people represent their backgrounds, cultures, things that are important to them,” Mellon said. “We’re inviting people to paint or decorate a five-by-five square, and then we’re going to be adding them to a quilt.”

Mellon said participating in Culturama is an exciting experience.

“Everyone’s so proud to share about their own cultures, and it really highlights how Melfort is a very diverse community,” she explained.

Culturama is a free family event, and Mellon encouraged everyone to come to the Kerry Vickar Centre and spend some time learning about other cultures.
