AAFC Seed Increase Unit to move to Saskatoon in 2028

Oct 6, 2026 | 4:46 PM

Next year will be a transition period for the Indian Head Research Farm Seed Increase Unit, or SIU.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) also confirmed SIU Farm will also operate out of the Saskatoon Research and Development Centre in 2027.

Full field SIU operational capacity for all crops, including wheat and forages, will remain at Indian Head in 2027. Seed processing and storage will also remain centred at Indian Head for the transition year.

For the 2027 growing season, the Saskatoon Research and Development Centre will host field operations for all SIU crops except wheat and forages.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Heath MacDonald said the federal government continues to look for ways to collaborate and enhance the country’s research and innovation activities.

“AAFC understands the economic value of the Canadian seed sector and remains committed to ensuring the Seed Increase Unit meets the high standards of pedigree seed production,” MacDonald said.

The Indian Head Research Farm and the Scott Research Farm are slated for closure in a cost-cutting move. The federal and Saskatchewan governments are negotiating to determine if research can continue at the two locations, with the possibility of producer organizations being involved as well.

AAFC said it remains committed to supporting the Canadian seed sector, fulfilling breeder seed requests and upholding pedigreed seed standards.
