Accessible pedestrian signals installed in downtown Melfort
Downtown Melfort now has three accessible pedestrian signals, but they’re not quite operational yet.
The buttons have been installed, but Director of Public Works Kalyna Cipywnyk said an issue with electrical components has meant the buttons are not working. The city hopes to have the buttons operational in a few weeks.
Cipywnyk said a delegation of concerned citizens brought the issue of accessible signals at three Main St. intersections to the attention of council two years ago.
“These citizens were concerned that the existing traffic signals at these locations did not adequately accommodate pedestrians with hearing or visual impairments, which resulted in significant traffic safety issues for both pedestrians and drivers,” Cipywnyk said.
