A Well Deserved Week Off

Mustangs reach double digit wins, shut out Stars for second time

The Melfort Mustangs became the second team in the SJHL to reach double wins on Wednesday.

Melfort did so with a 4-0 shutout victory over the visiting Battlefords North Stars, as Luke McKechnie made 26 saves in the win.

“He’s our rock back there; he’s super calm, which at the beginning of the year almost worried me because he was too calm, but now I know that that’s just who he is. Not to take away from his performance tonight, but we felt that we defended really well in front of him. Whenever there were chances, though, which they had a couple, he stood tall. He would calmly cover the puck, and we were able to reset, and he was just the backbone for us,” said assistant coach Clarke Huxley.

“We played pretty well for the most part. I thought there were a few lulls here and there, but we talked about it after the game, and understood that we cheated towards the defence. Offence wasn’t necessarily going in a ton early, but I never thought that we were really too under the gun. We defended really well, and it felt like it was getting to be one of those nights where it might be a 1-0 game. We ended up getting rewarded more in the end, which is always good to see, but it was also good to see that we were able to play with a tight lead and make sure that we were defending it well.”

The second meeting of the season between these two clubs was the second time the Mustangs were able to beat the Stars via a shutout.

The contest was 0-0 after one and just 1-0 after two, before the Stangs added three, late in the third.

Forwards Lincoln Rogers and Tyson Janzen both had multi-point nights, with a goal and two assists, and a pair of markers, respectively.

“They deserved it tonight; honestly, they’ve deserved it more so all year, it just hasn’t gone in for them. To their credit, they stuck with it, their process has been there, and they worked hard. They played well and were big pieces for us offensively and defensively, so it was good to see them get after it and get a couple of points,” Huxley added.

The Blue and Green will now look to a bit of time off, as they won’t play again until next Saturday, with a handful of the players set to return home for a few days.

“We’re really happy with the performance tonight. We talked about not getting too ahead of ourselves and looking at the break, so credit to the guys; I thought they did a great job, and it’s a testament to the leadership of the 20-year-olds. They really made sure that everyone was dialled in and bought in, because they knew they had a job to do before the break started,” concluded Huxley.
