Nipawin locals claim hardware during badminton provincials on home court

The Saskatchewan High School Athletics Association (SHSAA) held their annual badminton provincials at Nipawin’s L.P. Miller Comprehensive School this past weekend that saw a handful of athletes collect hardware on home court.

Nipawin’s Martina Moore and Toni Akinwuntan won gold in girls doubles, going undefeated in the tournament. They beat Sofia Francisco and Claire Tacsay of Regina’s Leboldus High School 2-1 (13-21, 21-18, 21-19) in the finals, while fellow Nipawin schoolmates Keira Tallon and Sydney Velasco took home bronze over Rose Poligrates and Kim Jupiter of O’Neill High School in Regina, winning 2-0 (21-19, 23-21).

Nipawin also placed on the podium in girls singles with Ksenia Martens took home silver. She was downed by Regina Campbell Collegiate’s Jenny Chen in the finals 2-0 (21-11, 21-4), while Bedford Road’s Emma Grabowski from Saskatoon claimed bronze over Hargun Kaur of Saskatoon’s Tommy Douglas Collegiate, 2-1 (15-21, 21-10, 21-14).

In boys doubles, Campbell’s Daniel Xu and Jackson Lai claimed top spot on the podium, downing Evan Hardy’s Owen Zhang and Daniel Xiang from Saskatoon, 2-0 (21-15, 21-8). Meanwhile, Mathew Takach and Kieran Curtis of LeBoldus won bronze against Walter Murray’s Shuyan Han and Lucas Le, also by a 2-0 score (21-15, 21-12).

In boys singles, Felix Lin of Walter Murray won the provincial title against schoolmate Michael Yan 2-0 (21-11, 21-12), while Sebastian Callo of Regina’s Luther College High School won bronze, 2-0 (21-19, 21-19) over Estevan’s Dongjun Won.

Walter Murray also took home gold in mixed doubles as well, with Jenna Xu and Owen Dobrowsky taking down Lemberg’s Jake Mayo and Saren Petrychyn, 2-0 (21-17, 21-9). In the bronze medal match, Micah Salido-Porter and Tara Nguyen of Moose Jaw’s Central High School toppled Nipawin’s Tyler Johns and Jayden Spice in a close 2-1 (21-17, 16-21, 21-17) battle.

For Prince Albert’s competitors, St. Mary’s boy’s duo Greyson de Padua and Zayan Doctor finished the tournament at 0-3 while boy’s singles competitor Jackson Lepage finished with the same record.
