Mustangs to face Canucks for spot in National Final

The Melfort Mustangs are just one win away from a spot in this year’s National Final.

Currently standing in their way are the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) champions, Calgary Canucks.

The two will soon do battle, as the semi-final puck drop is scheduled for just after 5:30 p.m. Saskatchewan time, later tonight.

“We just gotta stick to what we’ve been doing, we’ve been ready to go every single game and we just gotta prepare like it’s any other game. If we play hard, strong and fast hockey, I think we’ll be good,” said Mustangs forward, Kaleb Binner.

“We want to make them play to our level and we don’t want to play down to theirs, because we’ve got one hell of a team.”

Melfort hasn’t played since Wednesday, in which they rested their top guys.

The team still played hard in that game, which was against the host Oakville Blades, as they came away with a victory to improve to 4 and 0.

Meanwhile, Calgary played just last night, in a quarter-final win over the Winkler Flyers.

Binner is confident in his team’s abilities, as he’s coming off his first playoff goal, while the group has now completed their final practice of the year.

“We’re just super excited and happy we were able to go 4 and 0. That was huge to get us an extra day’s rest, so everyone is pumped up and ready to go,” Binner added.

“It hasn’t really set in yet that there’s no more practices after this. It’s definitely sad, especially for the guys that are leaving, but we’re gonna do everything we can for these next two games to hoist another trophy.”

The Suncrest College pregame show will begin at 5:15 p.m., as the entire contest can be heard on 105CJVR.
