Cooke Municipal set to host northern golf tournament this weekend

May 30, 2024 | 10:33 AM

About 65 golfers are travelling to Prince Albert’s Cooke Municipal Golf Course this weekend to compete in the annual Ladies Northern Tournament.

Co-chair of the event Jackie Packet said its one of the province’s top golf events and attracts the top female amateur golfers from throughout the province and beyond.

“Kathy Ziegler has won the tournament several times. Kim Brown, who is a Prince Albert girl but lives in Saskatoon now. Audrey Perry is someone from Regina who’s faithfully come down every year. Gill Gracie from La Ronge has made a point of attending all the time.”

The event, which has winners listed from as far back as 1927, crowns both a ladies’ and senior ladies’ champion.

“So, it’s almost like two tournaments in one. You qualify for your flight after the first day, so there’s a championship flight and then there’s usually about six or seven flights after that,” said Packet. “So, there is room for all calibers of players in the tournament.”

Last year, Lauren Fox from Creighton, SK won the tournament after shooting 78 in both of her rounds. Prince Albert’s Pauline McDougall was crowned as the Senior Ladies champion.

“We’re just really happy with the support of a female sport. You know we are a bit of a minority as far as the sporting world goes, so we really try to keep the sport going,” said Packet. “It’s a tight support group. We know each other through the sport but we’re definitely a support for one another in our personal lives and our professional lives. We continue to encourage young golfers to join in.”

The Ladies Northern winners will be presented their awards Sunday afternoon. A participant will also be recognized at the end of the tournament with the Nadia Gisi Memorial Spirit of Golf Honour which is given to the player who shows the best spirit and respect for the game while on the course.
