Hawks hang tight despite lopsided shot clock in Flin Flon

The Nipawin Hawks opened the 2024-25 Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season Friday night with a 4-3 loss to the Flin Flon Bombers.

The score was closer than the shot clock may indicate, 19-year-old Nipawin netminder Tyson Endall faced 63 shots in the loss, making an incredible 59 saves giving the Hawks a chance to stay close for 60 minutes at the Whitney Forum.

After the Bombers opened the scoring on home ice, newly appointed Nipawin captain Finley Radloff redirected a shot from the blueline for his first goal of the campaign.

Flin Flon restored a one goal cushion with a shorthanded goal in the second period, but Nipawin bounced back with another tying tally, this time rookie forward Jack Janzen scored his first career SJHL goal.

Nipawin gave up a pair of goals early in the third period, got a late goal from Carter Anderson, but could not find the equalizer despite just 20 shots of their own through 60 minutes.

The Hawks scored once in three powerplay opportunities, although Nipawin allowed a shorthanded goal, Flin Flon didn’t capitalize on any of the five man advantages the Bombers were awarded.

Nipawin will host the La Ronge Ice Wolves for the home opener at the Centennial Arena Saturday beginning at 7 p.m.
