Mustangs acquire younger brother of last year’s star

The Melfort Mustangs have acquired a familiar name to their lineup, in the form of a younger brother.

Ashton Hutchinson has been picked up by Melfort, following a three-season stint with the Spruce Grove Saints.

Ashton is the 19-year-old brother of former Mustang Aidyn Hutchinson, who helped lead the club to an SJHL championship this past season.

The hope is that Ashton, like his brother, who also came to Melfort for his 19-year-old campaign from a team in Alberta, will spend two years in the northeast and flourish.

“Ashton plays the game the right way. Very consistent shift in and shift out and possesses a high motor. These attributes, along with his high level of skill will be a welcome addition to our forward group,” said Mustangs Head Coach Trevor Blevins.

In three combined seasons in Spruce Grove, split between the AJHL (Alberta Junior Hockey League) and the BCHL (British Columbia Hockey League), Hutchinson suited up 61 times for the Saints, collecting seven goals and nine assists for 16 points.

The five-foot-nine, 165-pound native of St. Albert, Alta. played with his hometown U18 AAA Raiders, prior to the jump to Junior A, where he accumulated 47 points (26 goals and 21 assists) in just 54 games, over a two-season span.

A 2005-born forward, Hutchinson won’t be readily available to don the Blue and Green when the Stangs clash with the Melville Millionaires this weekend, for a home-and-home matchup, as he is not set to arrive until Sunday.
