The Hawks are in the win column thanks to Carter Anderson’s overtime goal Friday in Estevan.

Seeking their first win of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season, Nipawin squandered a three goal lead in the third period, but were able to secure the victory after Anderson scored just a minute into overtime against the Bruins.

He said the victory was gigantic for the team’s psyche after losing their opening five games this season.

“It’s huge, a huge momentum boost, huge moral boost, it’s definitely going to help us get rolling into the season here,” the 19-year-old Calgary product said after the game.

Mark Lafleur opened the scoring in the opening period for the Hawks who were coming off a 5-0 drubbing in Notre Dame Thursday to start a three game road trip.

Finley Radloff and Will Whitter each scored powerplay goals in the second period staking the Hawks to a 4-1 lead, however a sluggish start to the third led to two shorthanded goals against early in the final frame followed by a late powerplay goal forcing overtime.

Anderson said the team remained composed and were able to get the job done.

“It feels amazing, it feels really good to be one of the guys that can lead this young group,” Anderson added. “I think we’ve got a really good group that can surprise people in this league, and this is just the start for us.”

Anderson added an assist in the win, and Konnor Watosn chipped in with two assists.

Tyson Endall was credited with 41 stops in the Nipawin net to earn his first win of the season as well.

The Hawks will conclude the road trip Saturday in Weyburn against the Red Wings. Faceoff is set for 7 p.m. at Crescent Point Place.

The game will not be broadcasted on 750 Beach Radio due to the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ game.
