P.A.’s Nelson returning to Mustangs after WHL stint

Oct 8, 2024 | 12:00 PM

The Melfort Mustangs will have a relatively familiar face returning to the organization right away.

Prince Albert native Owen Nelson is coming back to Melfort to rejoin the club, following his quick stint with the WHL’s Lethbridge Hurricanes.

“We’re excited to get him back,” said Mustangs’ head coach Trevor Blevins. “He played an affiliate role with us last year and did a great job. He’s a proven goal scorer at multiple levels and a big guy who competes hard.”

Nelson played two games in Lethbridge to begin the season (along with two matches last postseason), following his contract signing with the club, back in February.

Meanwhile, the 2007-born product suited up four times with the Stangs last regular season, before playing three games in the playoffs, in which he scored his first career SJHL goal.

Most of Nelson’s previous three years have been spent with the Prince Albert Mintos U18 AAA squad.

In 95 career contests, the 17-year-old has 69 points as a Minto, which have included 38 goals and 31 assists.

Nelson, a 6-1, 172-pound forward also played for Team Sask. at the 2024 National Aboriginal Hockey Championships, back in May, in which Saskatchewan won silver in Grand Prairie, Alta.

The Blue and Green will next play this weekend, when they begin a back-to-back, home-and-home set with the Bombers, Friday in Flin Flon.
