The Nipawin Hawks are making a habit climbing back into games and earning wins, but Tuesday the comeback was too early in a 6-5 overtime loss to Yorkton.

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) clubs were meeting for the third time this season and second and final time in Nipawin, the Hawks three game home winning streak started against the Terriers on Nov. 29.

The Hawks won both games against Yorkton, but the success looked in jeopardy after the Terriers opened a 3-0 lead in the opening 10 minutes of the game, but the Hawks clawed back tying the score 3-3 before the first period concluded. Nipawin took a 5-3 lead in the second, but couldn’t hold on, Yorkton scored twice in the third period to force overtime, where Jye Zawatsky scored the game winner. Ashton Tait had four assists to lead the Hawks comeback attempt, the 18-year-old Prince Albert product said the team just couldn’t close out in the final frame.

“It was a pretty good game, good on us for battling back a bit there but we know we have to play better in the third. We will work on it this week and be ready to go for the weekend,” Tait said.

Brady Seabrook scored his second goal, Carter Anderson added his ninth of the year, Aiden Bruce tied the game 3-3 with his second in Nipawin.

In the second period Will Whitter picked up his seventh goal of his rookie campaign and Conor Ryan also added his second. Tait assisted on the first four goals. He now has seven points in his last three games. The former Kamloops Blazer admits he’s starting to find his game at the junior ‘A’ level.

“Yeah, definitely,” Tait agreed. “Obviously you know I am starting to figure things out a bit, getting some chemistry with some guys. I think overall as a team we are stating to play better so we just need to keep the momentum going.”

In the loss Nipawin did extend their home point streak to five games, that began with a comeback 4-3 shootout loss to the Battlefords on Nov. 26.

Nipawin will take on La Ronge twice this weekend beginning Friday on the road. The Hawks haven’t been able to beat the Ice Wolves this year, something Tait hopes changes this weekend.

“They play hard, it’s going to be a couple good games. We just have to make sure we play our way, play a complete 60 minutes and it should be a good weekend,” he concluded.

Friday’s game faces off at 7:30 p.m. from the Mel Hegland Uniplex, Saturday’s return matchup in Nipawin will be a 7 p.m. start.
