Year in Review: Carrot River Valley School celebrates grand opening

Dec 26, 2024 | 10:00 AM

A significant milestone in the northeast in 2024 was the grand opening of the new Carrot River Valley School.

The facility opened to students from Grades 5 through 12 back in January, but kids from Kindergarten to Grade 4 had to wait until September to move into the new facility.

Several dignitaries were on hand for the grand opening event in September, including Premier Scott Moe.

He told northeastNOW’s Ben Tompkins at the time the new facility was all about the students that will use it now and into the future.

“The kids who are here today and the ones that will attend for years into the future. I hope this school provides the greatest learning opportunity possible for years to come,” Moe said.

Construction on the nearly $27 million school started in 2022, with the new building able to accommodate nearly 350 students.

Then-Education Minister Jeremy Cockrill said during the grand opening that the facility was about providing an updated space that students can learn in.

“We know that our population is growing every year, and that means more families and more students in our province, so we have to make sure that there are the school buildings to accommodate that growth,” Cockrill said.

Carrot RIver Valley School Principal Sari Carson said after students first moved in early in the year that she was thrilled with the new facility.

“It feels fantastic. This has been a long time coming as we’ve watched it go up right before our eyes.”
