Going for 18 in a row

Mustangs look to break tie with 2011/12 Broncos in Battlefords

Jan 7, 2025 | 2:56 PM

The Melfort Mustangs have a chance to break modern-era history, tonight in Battlefords.

Melfort is currently on a 17-game win streak, which has them in a tie with the 2011/12 Humboldt Broncos for the most in a row since 2000. The all-time record is 30 from the 1981-82 Prince Albert Raiders.

The Mustangs travel to North Battleford on Tuesday night to take on the Stars, searching for number 18.

The ‘Stangs brought a 15-game winning streak into 2025, and have since won their first two games of the new year, this past weekend against the Melville Millionaires.

Melfort hosted Melville on Friday night and secured a 3-0 shutout victory in what was a dominant defensive effort, as they only gave up 14 shots.

The Mustangs then travelled to Melville on Saturday, shutting out the Millionaires once again by a score of 3-0.

The Blue and Green had two powerplay goals, two even-strength goals and two shorthanded empty-net goals in the weekend set, as Kristian Coombs picked up both victories, stopping all 35 combined shots that came his way.

The pair of victories gave the ‘Stangs the season series over the Millionaires, three games to one, as the two clubs won’t see each other again the rest of the way, unless they were to meet up in the playoffs.

As for the season series against Battlefords, the Blue and Green currently hold a 2-0 advantage over the Stars, having won the prior two meetings, back at the Northern Lights Palace.

The first matchup came on Oct. 22, in what was a 4-0 shutout, before an even bigger blowout on Nov. 29, which results were 8-1.

Despite the domination that Melfort has had so far over the North Stars, Mustangs’ assistant coach Tye Scherger knows it won’t come nearly as easy on the road, especially in a place like Battlefords, with a millennial record potentially on the mind.

“Just focus on our game, that’s the biggest thing when you’re on the road. We’re going to Battleford and they’re playing well right now,” Scherger told northeastNOW.

“The biggest thing is we got to start heavy, that is very important, especially in that barn. We gotta come out heavy and just play our style, if we do that I think we’ll be just fine.”

Puck drop at the Access Communications Centre in North Battleford is set for 7:30 p.m.
