Keup scores twice as Mustangs get back in the win column

The Melfort Mustangs refused to begin a losing streak this weekend, taking down the Yorkton Terriers 5-1 on Saturday night.

Melfort lost their first game in nearly two months on Tuesday against the Battlefords North Stars, but responded in a big way, back at home.

The Mustangs led the Terriers 4-0 after two periods, as the game was never really close, beating Yorkton during the two club’s first meeting of the season.

Rookie defenceman Logan Keup had a pair of goals, as he doubled his point total on the season, during the victory.

“We kept it simple, played hard, took away their time and space and advanced the puck one zone at a time. I think it worked out well for us, it showed, and as a team, we worked great together and got some offence going,” Keup told northeastNOW.

“The first one I saw two guys going down, two on two, so I thought I’d join and make it an odd man rush. Cox made a good play and I capitalized on it. The next one, I picked the puck up in the neutral zone and took it in and saw a hole, and I made a nice shot and it went in.”

The Stangs were scheduled to play a pair of home games on the weekend, however, their Friday night contest against the Ice Wolves was postponed due to a La Ronge bus issue.

That forced the Blue and Green to run an unusual late-night practice on Friday, however, it seemed to help them on Saturday.

“It was weird, we had practice at seven o’clock, so it was different. You usually don’t have a late practice like that the day before a game, but we kind of got to get our stuff together and prepare for a new team. I think it worked out and it was a good night.”

The Mustangs next game is scheduled for this Wednesday when they play host to the Kindersley Klippers, at the Northern Lights Palace in Melfort.
