Jan 13, 2025 | 5:00 PM

Putting a spotlight on human trafficking.

The Marguerite Riel Centre is hosting Break the Chains, a human trafficking awareness event Jan. 30, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Kerry Vickar Centre in Melfort.

“We hope to bring awareness about human trafficking by bringing in these speakers,” said Kevin Arcand of the Marguerite Riel Centre.

He said they hope to increase awareness through prevention and online safety. Guest speakers include Amy Acorn of PA Mobile Crisis, Alyson Bear who speaks on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Woman and Girls, Chanda Hetzel and Chelsea Naytowhow of the RCMP, and Kendra Mazer of Hope Restored.

Arcand said he and several of his colleagues were part of the awareness session previously and the reality of human trafficking and the dangers it presents was striking to them.

“It’s not something that a lot of people might think about because of the harshness of it,” Arcand said. He added an event like this helps provide people with information about trafficking, and concerns about how it can even be done online.

“I think it’s great to be able to know some of this information to be able to prevent some of these things.”

According to the Marguerite Riel Centre, human trafficking is the second fastest growing criminal industry in the United States, and 99 per cent of trafficked victims are never rescued.

There are limited spots available for the presentation, and to register you can call 306-752-4950.
